The Original Xbox 360 Launch - What For Heaven's Sake Happened?

Having sold in excess of 84 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide as of mid-2014, it's somewhat of a surprise to see that this original gaming console is only ranked 6th in terms of sales versus some of it's more illustrious competitors that are around.

It has to be said that when the Xbox 360 was originally unveiled on May 12 2005 on the popular MTV channel, this home game console developed by Microsoft was hugely anticipated. Expectations reached epic proportions as game information was leaked leading up to the Electronic Entertainment Expo, later on in that month.

To say Microsoft had created a feeding frenzy could have been considered a masterstroke, that is of course had everything gone exactly as to plan. The initial global launch ran in to problems almost right from the get go. Demand exceeded supply just about everywhere, with Europe and North America right at the top of the list.

As if that in itself wasn't bad enough, these early version consoles did not quite match up to their star billing. Something somewhere had gone awry with quality control prior to shipment of the product. A high level of failure to perform was now coming back to the company at an alarming rate, the "Red Ring of Death" had struck.

Oh what to do with such a calamitous situation on their hands! The only viable option, rather than costing the company any further grief and money, not to mention the incredible intensity of this now unravelling unwanted publicity, was to try to make amends by extending the warranty period on all the affected units.

Two further redesigns have since been launched with the 'S' model in 2010, and more recently the Xbox 360 E in 2013. As expected compared to the initial launch, things went more according to plan!

With 2016 rapidly approaching people are starting to wonder what the future will hold for them along with their Xbox 360. Microsoft have already declared their intention to continue support until at least 2016, but then what? What can be expected and what will happen after this date? Let's hope it doesn't turn into another fiasco like the original launch, that's all everyone needs!
